Having bacterial vaginosis (BV) is so embarrassing that an infected woman would not dare discuss it with anyone. For this reason, women find home remedy a more discreet and convenient way of treating this disease. Fortunately, there are several ways to treat bacterial vaginosis at home.

Washing Up

Cleanliness can be one way of treating or preventing bacterial infections in the vaginal area. However, the most common mistake most women do is to wash up too often. Washing up is hygienic, but if a woman does it too often it might cause the skin of the vagina to dry up. Normally, a dried up skin is flaky and this condition can be itchy. Irritation will follow if flaking persists until it becomes another infection.

To avoid vaginal skin from drying up, it is suggested that women wash up 2 to 3 times daily. The use of clean or purified water will ensure that no other bacteria will get into the vagina. Drying up using a wet tissue may irritate the skin especially when using scented ones. Scented wet tissue may contain strong perfume or alcohol that may worsen vaginal irritation. The use of dry paper towel is better as long as it is thick enough not to tear when wiped on a wet vaginal surface.

Wear Clean Underwear and Regularly Change it

Wearing clean underwear may help prevent vaginal infection. However, regularly changing it will even be more effective. Bacterial vaginosis is known to excrete a white odorous discharge. This discharge may reach the underwear and bacteria may proliferate more – this worsens the infection.

Yogurt

Yogurt is known to fight off infections aside from being used as food for dieters. It can also be used as suppository by soaking it in a tampon. The tampon will contain the antibacterial properties of yogurt, thus treating the infection in the vagina.

Garlic

Aside from being one of the most popular spices in the world, garlic is also known for its antibacterial properties. An effective way of curing vaginitis is to wrap a clove of garlic in gauze and insert it in the vagina. Some women choose to use garlic supplement as an alternative.

Grape Seed Extract

Grape seed extract is also known for its antibacterial properties. Diluting a teaspoon of this extract in 2 cups of water makes a good vaginal douche.

In addition to all the home remedies mentioned above, it is still important to drink plenty of water daily. Water re-hydrates and helps flush out harmful bacteria out of the body.
